Add support to set fixed HE rate/GI/LTF values using nl80211.
Reuse parts of the existing code path already used for HT/VHT
to implement the new helpers symmetrically, similar to how
HT/VHT is handled.

Tested-on: QCN9274 hw2.0 PCI WLAN.WBE.1.0.1-00029-QCAHKSWPL_SILICONZ-1

The same initialization of he_mcs is missing in the ath12k_mac_assign_link_vif()

Hi Maxime

I believe, this is default GI based on device capability of HE for
ath11k or EHT for ath12k.

Your patch alters the behaviour of this code in
ath12k_peer_assoc_h_ht():

        /* As firmware handles these two flags (IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_20
         * and IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_40) for enabling SGI, reset both
         * flags if guard interval is Default GI
         */
	if (arvif->bitrate_mask.control[band].gi == NL80211_TXRATE_DEFAULT_GI)
	        arg->peer_ht_caps &= ~(IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_20 |
				IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_40);

	if (arvif->bitrate_mask.control[band].gi != NL80211_TXRATE_FORCE_LGI) {
		if (ht_cap->cap & (IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_20 |
	            IEEE80211_HT_CAP_SGI_40))
                        arg->peer_rate_caps |= WMI_HOST_RC_SGI_FLAG;
	}

I don't understand why a patch adding a feature to force GI would alter
the current behaviour without any actual forcing ?

we have a helper for this so please use it:

	sta = ath12k_ahsta_to_sta(ahsta);

Hi Maxime,

Apologize for my earlier comment. Firmware relies on peer_rate_caps and
bandwidth settings when configuring GI. Currently default is configured
as FORCE_SGI. When there is fixed rate settings configured from user
space to override defaults to replace SHORT GI with DEFAULT_GI, the code
snippet you mentioned ensures honoring this by removing HT_CAP_SGI_20
and HT_CAP_SGI_40. The behavior has been same for ath11k driver as well.

I will get back with more detailed information as soon as possible.

Thanks for understanding,

Best regards,
Pradeep

Hi Maxime

Yes, your understanding is correct..

This is detailed explanation.

In 11n, 11ac, the supported Guard intervals are
0.4usGI (Short GI) - enum value used for this in firmware - 1
0.8usGI (Long GI) - enum value used for this in firmware - 0

If peer support SGI, param_value 1 is sent to firmware where firmware
switches between SGI/LGI based on packet error rate. This param value 1
corresponds to NL80211_TXRATE_FORCE_SGI in nl80211.

If user overrides this by setting default GI specifically, then we will
override this config to send enum 0 to use LGI always irrespective of
PER in firmware. Using SGI would slightly give a better throughput.

FW uses 0.8us GI by default for 11ax and 11be.

Hope this helps!

Thanks
Pradeep

So your patch actually does two things:
  - add support for fixed rate
  - fix default value sent for GI config to the firmware

> switches between SGI/LGI based on packet error rate. This param value

Is this what we really want ?

I understand the nl80211 enum like this:

NL80211_TXRATE_FORCE_SGI:
 => if STA supports SGI: use SGI only
 => if STA does not support SGI: use LGI only (or SGI only ? IDK)

NL80211_TXRATE_FORCE_LGI:
 => always use LGI

NL80211_TXRATE_DEFAULT_GI (no forcing)
 => if STA does not support SGI: use LGI only
 => if STA supports SGI: implementation defined, most likely SGI/LGI
chosen by rate control

Assuming my understanding is correct, should you not adapt
ath12k_peer_assoc_h_ht() to match this semantic ?

Hi Maxime,

Thanks for your comments..Looks like the definitions were added mainly
for test purposes to force SGI/LGI:
https://patchwork.kernel.org/project/linux-wireless/patch/1389167162-3681-1-git-send-email-janusz.dziedzic@tieto.com/

While following the semantic might improve code readability, based on
current firmware capabilities, we can force LGI when user sets
set_bitratemask but cannot force SGI always as firmware might endup
choosing LGI when PER is high.

let me make changes in next revision accordingly.

Thanks
Pradeep
