Having the .num_links as a separate struct field can provoke errors as it is easy to omit it or to put an incorrect value into that field. Turn .link_nodes into a NULL-terminated array, removing a need for a separate .num_links field if .link_nodes is being used. This creates a deviation between non-dynamic and dynamic ID cases, but it won't stay like that for too long.
